COVID-19 and Terrorism: Will we see more attacks? | QUICK HITS #26
Sunday Mar 22, 2020
Sunday Mar 22, 2020
As the world obsesses about COVID-19 could terrorists take advantage of our lack of focus? Will we see more terrorist attacks? If so, which groups will be most active - jihadis or the far right? All this is discussed in the latest Quick Hit.
The COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving and governments are having a hard time keeping up with strategies to respond and react effectively to keep their citizenry safe. Some countries appeared to dismiss the seriousness of the virus for far too long, while others imposed what some felt were draconian measures (China, Singapore) that would not fly in a Western liberal democracy.

Saturday Mar 21, 2020
Saturday Mar 21, 2020
Most terrorist attacks don't make major headlines because they kill people in places most of us have never heard of.
On March 21 2011, unidentified people on motorbikes attacked a construction crew in the port city of Gwadar in Balochistan province, an area in southwestern Pakistan, killing eleven. All in all four gunmen were involved: they all successfully fled the scene.

The COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving and governments are having a hard time keeping up with strategies to respond and react effectively to keep their citizenry safe. Some countries appeared to dismiss the seriousness of the virus for far too long (hello Trump administration), while others imposed what some felt were draconian measures (China, Singapore) that would not fly in a Western liberal democracy.

Today in Terrorism - 1995 - Sarin Attacks in Tokyo
Thursday Mar 19, 2020
Thursday Mar 19, 2020
On this day in 1995, chemical substances were released on the Tokyo metro. Sarin gas was the catalyst: it is an odourless, colourless liquid which is highly lethal and is listed as a chemical weapon. Packages left on the subway began to leak, creating toxic fumes that in the end killed 13 people and injured more that a thousand.
The toxin struck victims down in a matter of seconds, leaving them choking and vomiting, some blinded and paralysed.
