On April 5, 1986 a bomb went off in a Berlin disco (yes, there were discos in Germany in 1986), killing three people and wounding more than 200.

On this day in 2010, three suicide car bombs hit the centre of Iraq's capital city, Baghdad, killing at least 42 and injuring more than 200 others.

On this day in 2015, Al Shabaab terrorists besieged Garissa University in northeastern Kenya. Four gunmen stormed the campus and began firing indiscriminately.

On this day in 2018, the Somalia-based terrorist group Al Shabaab claimed it attacked an African Union (AMISOM) base with two car bombs, killing 59 Ugandan soldiers.

Lorne L. Dawson is a Canadian scholar of the sociology of religion who has written about new religious movements, the brainwashing controversy, and religion and the Internet. His work is now focused on religious terrorism and the process of radicalization, especially with regard to domestic terrorists.
Phil Gurski is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd. and Programme Director for the Security, Economics and Technology (SET) hub at the University of Ottawa’s Professional Development Institute (PDI). He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specializing in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation.
