Al Qaeda took more than half a year to follow up on 9/11 with a renewed attack.
On this day in 2002 a suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb outside the el-Ghriba synagogue in Djerba, Tunisia, killing 19, including 16 German and French tourists.

Bruce Hoffman has been studying terrorism for over 40 years and is recognised as one of the world's leading scholars on this phenomenon. He joins Borealis for a wide-ranging discussion on where terrorism has been and where it is headed.
Borealis talks with US terrorism scholar Bruce Hoffman, who has been studying violent extremism for more than four decades and is seen as one of the world's foremost specialists.
Bruce Hoffman is a political analyst specializing in the study of terrorism and counterterrorism, insurgency and counter-insurgency. He is a tenured professor at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where between 2010 and 2017 he was the director of the Center for Security Studies and director of the security studies program. Hoffman is the second longest-serving director in the center and program's three-decade history.
Phil Gurski is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd. and Programme Director for the Security, Economics and Technology (SET) hub at the University of Ottawa’s Professional Development Institute (PDI). He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specializing in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation.

Jewish terrorists may not be that well known but they are out there.
On this day in 2003 a bomb exploded in a West Bank school playground injuring 20 Palestinian children. The explosion tore through a classroom for 16-year-old boys as they returned from a midday recess.

ISIS regularly slaughtered followers of other religions in a misguided conviction that only its own faith is true.
On this day in 2017 the Islamic State affiliate in the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) launched two actions against Christian worshipers in Alexandria (St. Mark's) and Tanta (a Coptic Christian church) on Palm Sunday.

How has terrorism changed over the decades and, more importantly, where is it going in the next few years? I am joined by Dr. Colin Clarke, senior research fellow at the Soufan Center in New York, and author of After the Caliphate: the Islamic State and the future terrorist diaspora.
Colin P. Clarke is an adjunct senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, where his research focuses on terrorism, insurgency and criminal networks. At RAND, Clarke has directed studies on ISIS financing, the future of terrorism and transnational crime, and lessons learned from all insurgencies between the end of WWII and 2009. He is also an associate fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) in The Hague, a non-resident senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), an assistant teaching professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and a senior research fellow at The Soufan Center in New York City.
